Salmonella recall on Science Diet Pet Food sent to California, Nevada and Hawaii

By Michael Leaverton

The maker of Science Diet dog food, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, is issuing a specific recall over salmonella concerns.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 62 bags of Science Diet Adult Small & Toy Breed dry dog food (15.5 pounds) are being recalled, as they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.
The bags were part of a single production run, which was distributed to 17 veterinary clinic and pet store customers in California, Hawaii, and Nevada, between April 24 and May 13, 2014. The bags have the SKU number 9097 and the "best buy date" and production code of 08 2015 M094. The recall does not affect any other bags of Science Diet Adult Small & Toy Breed dry dog food.
Hill's says the product was "accidentally released, as revealed during a routine inventory reconciliation." The 17 clinics and pet stores who were sent the products have been identified, and there have been no reported illnesses.
According to the FDA, pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
According to the company, consumers who have purchased any of the bags should discontinue use of the product and immediately call Hill’s Pet Nutrition at (800) 445-5777 (Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.). The company says it will arrange to collect the unused portion of the product at its own expense at a time convenient for the consumer and will provide a full refund.

  1. If your dog has some medical issues, your veterinarian may recommend a specific diet for your dog based on what kind of problems he has. Your dog's diet should consist of a balance of nutrients, fats, carbs and protein. If you simply want to ensure your dog is getting everything his body needs to help her maintain a healthy weight and give her vitality, choose a high-quality, brand name dog food. Provide them Healthy Food.
